Foods to consume when depressed

Feeling low? And you don’t really know what type of food to hog on to. Like always, we are here to solve your eating misery. There are times when depression hits us hard and we don’t really know the solution for the problems. There are some of us who hog on to chocolates, ice creams, pastries and chips.

Clinical depression is a serious illness and a person suffering from depression should consult a doc. But also intake of right food can help beating this ‘feeling low’ to some extent.

Here are 5 food items to consume and feel a little better;

  1. An omelette:

This will help you feel good but remember that do not skip the yolk. The egg yolk is rich in vitamin B and egg in overall provides with proteins. Eggs can be consumed in a variety of ways.

Other examples of vitamin B and protein rich food are: Lean beef, wheat germ, fish and poultry.

  1. Nuts and seeds:

Consume nuts and seeds for the magnesium that it contains. Magnesium is a mineral found mostly in nuts and seeds. It also provides the body with overall energy.

Other examples of magnesium rich food are: Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, peanuts. (Green leafy vegetables and whole grains are also high in magnesium.)

  1. Cold-water fish:

The cold-water fish contains omega-3 fatty acids. These foods are also known as the “brain food” the reason being, they increase membrane quality and nerve functioning of grey matter in the brain.

Other examples of omega-3 fatty acids rich food are: Wild salmon, herring, sardines, anchovies and tuna (not more than once per week)

  1. Ancient grains:

These foods are rich in complex carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates take long to digest hence creating lesser mood swings. These Ancient grains are good when it comes to fight depression.

Other examples of complex carbohydrates rich foods are: Quinoa, millet, teff, amaranth, spelt, barley.

  1. Green tea:

Green tea is filled with amino acid L-theanine and Reardon says, “Despite the caffeine, the L-theanine in green tea seems to be profoundly relaxing, with effects that last up to eight hours.”

Other examples of amino acid L-theanine rich foods are: Hot green tea, brewed iced green tea

Depression can be an illness that is very difficult to fight. You must always consult a doc that can provide you with better help.
